Buraco is a card game for 2 players or 4 players in pairs.
The aim is to create combinations formed either by straights or, depending on the mode, sets of 3 or more cards of the same number and end up with more points than your opponents.
It is played with 2 decks of English cards with jokers (except open mode)
First 11 cards are dealt to each player and two groups of 11 cards each are left at a side, one per player or per team when playing in pairs . These groups of cards are called "The Dead " . All other cards will become part of the deck (draw pile).
Each player at the start of the turn , has the option to draw a card from the deck or keep all accumulated in the discard pile to form combinations (except the first player that only has the option of drawing cards from the deck since there will be yet to discarded cards).
You do all the combinations you want and they should always be a minimum of 3 cards. Later on you will be adding others and if the combinations are 7 cards or more these will be called RUNS.
* In Open and Closed WTTC, you can not form groups of cards of the same number , only straights.
When you finish making combinations you must necessarily have to discard a card from yours and place it in the discard pile (these cards are always face up except in the closed type that only the last one will face up).
Every turn therefore, you will be either picking one card of the deck or the discard pile depending on what you prefer, creating new combinations or adding cards to the combinations you already had and you will discard one of yours. These steps will be done each turn.
Number twos and jokers make the wildcard function and can be used in any combination except in open type in which there are no jokers . (You will see below the features of each type of game) But! In a combination there can be only a wildcard . There may be two number 2 cards, if one of them makes the wildcard function and the other is left in its natural position .
Runs are the main part in the game. To earn points, you will be creating combinations forming runs which are formed when you make a combination of 7 cards or more.
There are different types of runs :
Clean run: is formed without using any wildcards.
Royal run: is when you form a clean run that goes from Ace to King.
Run ace to ace: Get a clean run ace to ace (except dirty type).
Dirty run: are formed with the help of a wildcard.
* A dirty run can become clean only when 2 is used as wildcard and gets moved to the original position 2. Number 2 therefore must be of the same suit.
The dead are 2 groups of 11 cards that are separated from the rest at the start of the game (1 group per player or pair) and is picked up when you run out of cards the first time.
In this case of game by pairs the first of the couple to end his cards will get the dead)
If the cards of the deck run out, the dead will become part of the deck.
